Xeni Gwet'in Economics

Ranching has been part of Xeni Gwet'in since early 1900's and that has been passed down to the next generation.? Today Xeni has about 50% of the members still ranching.? The community members have also been involved in guiding for tourist lodges and doing arts & crafts in early 1900's.? Today about 25% of the members are still into tourism like trail riding, guiding for tourist lodges, and doing arts & crafts, but it's growing.

In 1900's Xeni Gwet'ins made income by trapping and selling furs, guiding hunters.? Members worked for non-natives building bridges, building log homes, putting up hay by team horses, selling arts & crafts:? such as buckskin coats, gloves, moccassins, clothing, and various bead works.? Today have added to selling buckins, like brief cases, hand bags, beaded belts, and more.

Xeni Gwet'ins had few community members started horse logging in 1992 and stopped in 1996 to work for other logging and mining companies outside of Nemiah Valley.? The Xeni Gwet'in 1st Nations Government opened up a business which is called Xeni Gwet'in Enterprise.? This organization installs all the water and sewage systems, build & maintains roads & bridges, develops subdivisions, housing developments, builds houses, and does all the maintenance in the community.

The Xeni Gwet'in Enterprise owns the portable sawmill, and heavy-duty equipment: including three graders, two dump trucks, backhoe, CAT (bulldozer), and excavator.? Xeni Gwet'in Enterprise grades all the gravel roads.

Natasewed Joint Venture with Lignum & Xeni Gwet'in 1st Nations Government trained Forest Technicians and Tree Spacers in 1994.? For four years Natasewed had up to 25 Forest Technicians and Tree Spacers working.? After 1999 Xeni Gwet'in 1st Nations Gov't pulled out of Natasewed Joint Venture because the Xeni Gwet'ins didn't agree with Brittany Triangle Forest Management & Strategic Operating Plan, in year 2000 did Silviculture Spacing under Xeni Gwet'in Enterprise Forest Division.?
