Xeni Gwet'in First Nations Government

There are three levels of the Xeni Gwet'in 1st Nations Government formally Nemiah Valley Indian Band which is a custom election process. The Chief election is every five years - February, have to be Xeni Gwet'in to run for Chief and language is priority. To be elected in as Chief, you need 51% of the total votes, if not the top two run off against each other for the second vote. The Councillors election is every five years - June, the top two get in as Councillors.?

Xeni Gwet'in have always allowed off reserve members to vote, and it's also done through phone in votes. Voters have to produce their Indian Status and Xeni Gwet'in 1st Nations Government Code numbers through phone before they can vote. Chief & Councillors make all decisions on DIA, other Government, all other funds applied for by Xeni Gwet'in 1st Nations Government, and staffing &? disciplining of the funds. Xeni Gwet'in members decide on any natural resource activities with the Xeni territory, and Aboriginal Rights & Title issues through referendum votes.

The Council Meetings are on the first & third Wednesdays of each Month. General Assemblies are last Thursday of each months, meetings are done in Tsilhqot'in Lanaguage. Staffs: including Manager, Bookkeeper, Education Coodinator, Social Development Worker, Childcare Worker, Ts'il?os Parks Ranger, and ?Inteniluyni Workers (Economics).

Staffs are evaluated yearly. There are various committees: including elders, housing, rodeo & mountain race, Pow-Wow, Brittany Gathering, fund raising, Charlene William Daycare, ?Inteniluyni Advisory (economic development), Ranchers, skidoo race, education, and social & health. Xeni Gwet'in 1st Nations Government started Tsilhqot'in (Chilcotin) Immersion in September 1995, staffs are teacher with assistant.
