Long ago a guy named Roy Haines was riding the country to see if he could raise cattle out here.? This was when people around here didn't own any cattle or very
many horses.? They just moved around.? Them days there was no moose at all and very few deers, just fishes is mostly what they lived on and also berries, wild potato and bear teeth plant.? Things like that.
Anyway, this guy Roy Haines rode this country and he figured this was a hell of a place to raise his cattle because he seen all the grass around stood tall and on the hillsides was at least a foot tall and down low was two feet or more.? I guess Sammy William was riding with him and he told Roy the story about Mount Tatlow.? He told Roy that this peak called Mount Tatlow was once a man before.? Tatlow had a wife named ?Eniyud.? Between them they had six kids altogether.? I guess they split up.? Couldn't get along with each other.? Each of them took three kids and separated.? Tatlow turned into a rock with his kids above Xeni Lake and ?Eniyud turned into a rock with her kids over the other side of Tatlayoko Lake.? Sammy told Roy that when you point at Tatlow he'll make it rain or snow on you.? Anyway, Roy told Sammy he was going to bring his cattle and horses out here because he figured there's lots of hay out here.? So Sammy told him that Tatlow didn't like white men.
Roy Haines and his cowboys brought some of his cattle out anyway, then they went back to pick up the rest of the cattle and started to chase them out towards Nemiah.? When they got close to Nemiah, where they could stay for awhile, he got his men to ride ahead to check the other cattle in the valley.? When the boys got close enough to see the valley from the hill, they found out that it snowed in the mountains.? So they went to check it out.? When they got down in the valley they found that all the snow on the mountain slid down about four feet high in the valley.? So their cattle were stranded in the slide, plus the horses they left there.
Then the boys went back to Roy Haines and told him, so Roy took his cattle back and made a ranch over by Chilko River, other side of Stone, which is now called Chilko Ranch.?
